NHCSL Releases Child Health Survey Report

Washington, DC – The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) today released its first-ever Child Health Survey Report & Findings. The report presents the current attitudes and perspectives that Hispanic state legislators have on child health issues such as childhood obesity, nutrition education, physical activity, and they provide some of the solutions that are working in their state.

“This report is an important component of NHCSL’s ongoing commitment to health issues,” said NHCSL President Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (NY). “We look forward to utilizing this report as a tool to help our state legislators gain a better understanding about the root causes and effects of childhood obesity and learn what more can be done to make change to improve the lives of the constituencies we serve.”

The report was made possible through a $50,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Hispanic state legislators represent a combination of urban, rural and suburban populations that range in size from 25,000 to 700,000.

The key findings of the report reveal that:

  • Hispanic state legislators do consider improving the health and wellness of children and families in their district an important issue.

  • Partnerships with state agencies, schools, parents and community groups are very important to help reduce illnesses and diseases related to childhood obesity.

  • Legislation to address childhood obesity, nutrition and physical activity is important to stem the tide of chronic health conditions.

  • Better and safer neighborhoods with sidewalks, parks and walk paths and bike trails are vital to reducing childhood obesity.

The Child Health Survey Report & Findings is a part of NHCSL’s ongoing health programs and initiatives. A series of recommendations are highlighted in the report. The report is available on www.nhcsl.org.
