NHCSL Statement Following Targeted Political Violent Attacks in Minnesota
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the president of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL), Rep. Angela Romero (UT), released the following statement:
“The news of the assassination of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the assassination attempt of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, is devastating and terrifying. We extend our most sincere condolences to the Speaker’s family and loved ones, and wish the Senator and his spouse a successful and speedy recovery. We also stand with their communities as they navigate the aftermath of these horrific attacks.
”State legislators are devoted public servants that believe in coming together to work for the betterment of their communities and their states. It is a difficult, sometimes thankless job powered by a strong commitment to their constituents and communities across their states. We witness this every day through the work of the members of our Caucus in all corners of the country, and it's unconscionable to think they could be in danger for representing their neighbors in our state capitols.
“There’s no space for political violence in our democracy. And, no matter where it comes from, it’s completely unacceptable. This weakens our foundations, creates division, and desensitizes us as a society. We hope for a full investigation that sheds light into these horrendous events and for the end of targeted attacks on all elected officials.”
