Dear Familia,
In 1989, state Senator Larry Trujillo (CO) recognized the crucial need to create a space where Hispanic state legislators could come together, learn from each other, become more effective, and harness their collective power. He founded the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators to give us, and future generations of Latino state legislators, a home. Now, 35 years later, there are more than 450 of us in over thirty-seven states and Puerto Rico.
We represent our backgrounds, communities, and families, and we honor that responsibility by working hard to ensure the voices and interests of the millions of constituents who trusted us to create better policies are heard and prioritized.
In a year filled with unprecedented attacks on DEI programs in my state of Utah and across the country, spaces where we can grow and feel represented cannot be taken for granted. Many of us come from communities, spaces, mentorships, or first opportunities that are now under threat and may not be available for the next generation of Latino leaders.
The best way we can celebrate the 35th anniversary of our Caucus, an organization that has made a tangible difference in so many of our lives and has served as a stepping stone for newly elected Hispanic legislators for decades, is to keep fighting for a place at the table and to keep spaces for growth open. We owe it to the next generation of legislators and leaders.
Lastly, I want to remind you all to register for our 22nd Annual Summit! We’ll convene in Denver from November 21st-24th, and I look forward to seeing you all there.
Respectfully,
Rep. Angela Romero (UT)
NHCSL President
