Lt. Gov. Howie Morales
Howie Morales, a Democrat from Silver City, became New Mexico's 30th Lieutenant Governor in November 2018 alongside Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. With 11 years of experience in the New Mexico Senate, including serving on the State Legislative Finance Committee, Morales has a strong background in state governance.
Raised in rural Grant County and educated at Western New Mexico University and New Mexico State University, Morales worked as a teacher and coach before entering politics. Throughout his career, he has been a vocal advocate for education, championing better pay and benefits for educators and addressing vacancies in state agencies.
As Lieutenant Governor, Morales temporarily led the State Public Education Department and played a key role in establishing the 'Early Childhood Education and Care Department.' He has also organized the inaugural 'School Safety Summit' and secured funding for after-school and summer learning programs, particularly in rural areas.
