Rep. José “Che” Pérez Cordero (PR)
Representative José “Che” Pérez Cordero was born on April 14, 1981 in the town of Aguada. In 2016, he was elected Representative for District 18, and in 2021, he became an At-Large Representative. Pérez was re-elected for a third term in 2024. He serves as the President of the Judiciary Committee and Vice President of the Federal Relations Committee. From his seat in the House of Representatives, he promotes progressive legislation in areas such as sports, environmental issues, consumer affairs, and essential services. Additionally, since 2017, Rep. Pérez Cordero has been a member of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Advisory Council. He currently serves as NHCSL's Treasurer.
Rep. Pérez Cordero is a product of the public education system. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, commonly known as "El Colegio." He also earned a Juris Doctor from the School of Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Ponce.
Rep. Pérez Cordero is admitted to practice law and serve as a notary in the jurisdiction of Puerto Rico, a practice he actively carried out until 2016. He held various positions in government agencies, including Special Assistant at the Office of the Commissioner of Municipal Affairs (OCAM) and Legal Advisor to the Public Service Commission (CSP). .
Rep. Pérez Cordero is a staunch advocate for Puerto Rico’s decolonization through its integration as a state of the United States. For this reason, he is a member of the New Progressive Party. From his position, he actively advocates for statehood in various forums, including the U.S. Congress.
