NHCSL Stands with Victims and Reaffirms Commitment to Accountability

Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) issued the following statement in response to a recent investigative report detailing allegations of abuse by César Chávez:

“We must hold abusers accountable, always and without exception.

“We stand in solidarity with the victims and their families, including civil rights leader Dolores Huerta with whom we, as an organization and as public servants, have shared decades of advocacy, growth and community. We are deeply saddened that she and others carried these truths for so long without the support systems necessary to pursue justice, accountability, and healing earlier in their lives.

“We, as Latino leaders, reaffirm our commitment to fostering environments where accountability is non-negotiable, where no individual’s legacy is ever used as a shield to excuse or conceal harm. No movement —no matter how impactful— should depend on the silence or suffering of women and girls.

“At the same time, we recognize that the actions of one individual do not define or diminish the collective contributions of the many advocates, farmers, organizers and civil rights leaders who have advanced justice and opportunity for our communities. Our progress has always been rooted in solidarity, dignity and purpose.

“Looking ahead, we are committed to ensuring that future generations inherit institutions grounded not only in justice and equity, but also in transparency, safety and respect. We will continue to elevate the voices of survivors. And, together, we renew our commitment to build communities where dignity is protected, truth is heard, and justice is a reality for all.”
