WASHINGTON, DC – El Caucus Nacional de Legisladores Estatales Hispanos (NHCSL, por sus siglas en inglés) hizo las siguientes declaraciones sobre la decisión del Departamento de Seguridad Interna federal (DHS) de dejar que se expire el Status de Protección Temporera (TPS, por sus siglas en inglés) para más de 200,000 salvadoreños, muchos de los cuales llevan trabajando legalmente en los Estados Unidos desde 2001. La decisión ha sido anunciada luego de que también se le revocara el TPS a los haitianos y nicaragüenses el año pasado. Reportajes de prensa indican que los hondureños que se benefician del programa pudieran ser los próximos en perder ese status migratorio.

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) issued the following statement on the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) decision to rescind the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of over 200,000 individuals from El Salvador, many who have been working legally in the US since 2001. This decision comes on the heels of a similar decision to allow TPS to expire for tens of thousands of Haitians and Nicaraguans. Reports indicate that Honduran beneficiaries of this program will also be targeted next.

WASHINGTON, DC – El Caucus Nacional de Legisladores Estatales Hispanos (NHCSL, por sus siglas en inglés) rechazó un memorando reciente del Fiscal General federal Jeff Sessions que revoca la política de la Administración Obama que le ordenaba a los fiscales federales a no enfocar recursos limitados de ley y orden en procesar crímenes menores de cannabis en estados que han legalizado su uso, ya sea para propósitos medicinales o recreacionales. La nueva política de Sessions da al traste con la evidencia científica, la voluntad democrática de los votantes en 29 estados y el Distrito de Columbia y afectará a los latinos y otras minorías desproporcionadamente.

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) firmly rejected a recent memorandum by Attorney General Jeff Sessions revoking Obama Administration policy that directed US Attorneys not to focus scarce law enforcement resources in prosecuting low-level cannabis offenders in states where it has become legal for either medical or recreational use. The new policy is contrary to scientific evidence, the democratic wishes of voters in 29 states plus the District of Columbia, and will disproportionately affect Latinos and other minorities.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Quad Caucus mourns the victims of the violent tragedy that took place August 11 and 12, 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Our sympathies go out to the families of those injured or killed. We strongly condemn the promotion of bigotry, racism and white supremacy. Any violence resulting from these beliefs is reprehensible, criminal, and has no place in the United States.

BOSTON, MA – For the first time in its history, the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) has taken a bold stance on two issues directly related to correcting chronic injustices committed against Latinos and many other Americans. NHCSL today approved two separate resolutions calling for the decriminalization of cannabis at the state and federal levels, as well as for stronger protections against workplace and service discrimination against the LGBTQ community. NHCSL has thus become the first major national Latino group to call for the decriminalization of cannabis. This comes on the heels of NHCSL’s recent announcement that it has canceled its annual convention in Austin, Texas and moved it to Chicago due to the Lone Star State’s recently enacted anti-immigrant SB4 Law.

BOSTON, MA – Por primera vez en sus historia, el Caucus Nacional de Legisladores Estatales Hispanos (NHCSL, por sus siglas en inglés) ha asumido una posición valiente sobre dos temas relacionados directamente a corregir injusticias crónicas contra los latinos y muchos otros estadounidenses. NHCSL hoy aprobó sendas resoluciones haciendo un llamado para descriminalizar el cannabis a nivel federal y estatal y otra exigiendo protecciones mayores contra el discrimen en el lugar de trabajo y servicios contra la comunidad LGBTQ. NHCSL por ende se convierte en el primer grupo latino nacional en solicitar la descriminalización del cannabis. Esto ocurre luego del anuncio reciente de NHCSL para cancelar su convención anual en Austin, Texas y moverla a Chicago gracias a la recién aprobada ley anti inmigrante SB4.

WASHINGTON, DC – El Caucus Nacional de Legisladores Estatales Hispanos (NHCSL, por sus siglas en inglés), le hizo un llamado hoy al Gobernador Asa Hutchison de Arkansas a que detenga inmediatamente la ejecución de ocho seres humanos que se aprestan a enfrentar la pena capital comenzando el lunes. NHCSL ha reclamado en reiteradas ocasiones al Congreso y los estados para que le pongan fin a este castigo inhumano, aprobando una resolución el año pasado exigiendo la prohibición de la pena de muerte en los Estados Unidos. Además, ésta misma semana, NHCSL se unió a varias organizaciones de todo el espectro ideológico, incluyendo sus socios en Equal Justice USA, firmando una carta conjunta al Gobernador Hutchison pidiéndole que detenga estas 8 ejecuciones pendientes.

WASHINGTON, DC – El Caucus Nacional de Legisladores Estatales Hispanos (NHCSL, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció hoy los ganadores de la Beca de Liderazgo John S. Martínez. Una subvención de $4,000 será entregada a 11 estudiantes latinos destacados para ayudar a pagar sus primeros dos años de matrícula universitaria. Esta beca es posible gracias a la Fundación Comcast y su compromiso con la comunidad hispana, ahora con el apoyo generoso de Honda.
